At 18, after my father passed away, I decided it was time to be true to myself. I was desperate to know whether I would be accepted by the people who mattered the most to me: my mom, my brother and sisters.

I grew up in Amarillo, a city of 150,000, and there were few resources for LGBT youth. I was a confused teenager and had no one to talk it over with, no peers to compare reactions with, or models who would convince me that it would all turn out OK.
