In late 2011, Pride Center San Antonio assumed the responsibilities of LGBT awareness and diversity training for new cadets at the San Antonio Police Academy. The committee was originally founded in 2006 by pioneering openly gay social worker Travis Peterson, following a conversation with Police Chief William McManus at a Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio meeting. The Stonewall Democrats and Mr. Peterson shepherded the group until Mr. Peterson left the committee for health reasons in 2011, at which time he passed the chairperson responsibilities to Naomi Brown, a Pride Center founding board member.
Ms. Brown—herself a masters level social worker like Mr. Peterson—chairs the committee to this day. More information about Travis Peterson and the history of the committee may be found by clicking here.
Pride Center San Antonio is tremendously honored to steward this vital service to the community. The Peace Officers Training Committee is entirely volunteer-driven.
