DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Guatemala in Free Fall”\, a conversation with Guatemalan human rights activist Luis Gutierrez and Jennifer Harbury\, American lawyer\, author\, and human rights activist\, on Saturday\, July 8\, 2023\, at 6 PM. \nThey will be talking about the historical and current political climate of Guatemala. Following a seminar-like discussion\, Jennifer Harbury and Luis Gutierrez will share their stories\, insights\, and experiences of working for human rights and justice in Guatemala\, as well as the impact that US policy and actions have on the lives of communities outside of this country. \nA Q&A session will follow the conversation.\nDoors open at 5:30 PM. \nJennifer K. Harbury is an activist\, author\, and attorney who has spent much of the past twenty years working to monitor and promote human rights in Guatemala. Her husband\, Efrain Bamaca Velasquez\, was a Mayan resistance leader who “disappeared” due to the Guatemalan military in 1992; subjected to long-term\, severe torture; then extrajudicially executed. Harbury’s efforts to save his life\, which included three dangerous hunger strikes\, resulted in startling disclosures about the close working relationship between the CIA and the Central American death squads. Since learning of her husband’s death\, she has devoted much of her time to press for human rights reforms for both the United States and Guatemalan governments. \nLuis Eduardo Gutierrez Marckwordt is a life- long Guatemalan human rights activist. His parents were both very involved in the reform efforts of President Jacobo Arbenz during the “Ten Years of Spring” (1944-1954). Luis grew up in the shadow of the 1954 CIA-sponsored coup and its violent aftermath. His father was imprisoned\, then assassinated; and many close family friends\, including the gifted poet Otto Rene Castillo\, were tortured and killed. Luis followed swiftly in their footsteps\, becoming an activist at an early age. He continues to this day to struggle for fundamental human rights and an end to official impunity for war crimes.

SUMMARY:Nature of Art Camp
DESCRIPTION:Nature of Art is a camp like no other! \n\n Nature of Art is a weeklong program offered in partnership with the UTSA School of Art. This art and science-based nature camp is held at Confluence Park where students can learn about nature and science through creative based practices led by local artists and educators. \n  \nEach day\, students will learn about a different theme tied into the ecosystem of the river\, park\, and the communities we live in. Much of the day will be spent making artwork that reflects our interest in the natural world. We will use clay\, fabric\, and paint\, work together and individually; learn to look and pay attention to things we may have overlooked before. Students should expect to spend time by the river\, climbing\, jumping\, and walking outside. \nEach day will have a full schedule with several art projects\, writing or storytelling time\, lunch\, a time to play\, and a discussion. On some days we will have an environmental or scientific ambassador come and share their knowledge with us. Our emphasis is on creating art and building art skills\, stewarding our San Antonio River\, creating a supportive and kind community\, and expressing ourselves while learning by observation and imagination. \n  \nPROGRAM INFORMATION: \nTuition is $125 per student for the week. Transportation is not provided to or from the program. Participants will need to bring their own lunch and water bottle. Snacks will be provided. Join us as we kick off Latino Conservation Week in San Antonio\, TX with “Agua es Vida; Water is Life\,” highlighting the importance of protecting our oceans\, rivers\, and creeks. Celebra con nosotros on Sunday\, July 16\, 2023 at 6:30 PM at Confluence Park\, 310 West Mitchell Street. \nRosie Torres\, indigenous dancer and choreographer will perform a bilingual reading of the book We Are Water Protectors\, written by award-winning Ojibwe author Carole Lindstrom. Ms. Torres will begin the program by leading children and their families through a dynamic Land Acknowledgement filled with movement\, song\, and a call to the four directions. The reading will be followed by a water ritual at the banks of the river and a nature walk led by the Urban Bird Project (UBP). UBP members will guide children and their families on the proper way to use binoculars and draw attention to the birds and the incredible biodiversity the River supports. Throughout the nature walk\, the guides will share water and bird stories rooted in Indigenous wisdom. The goal of this program is to highlight the idea that by protecting our waters\, we are protecting life. Registered families will receive a FREE copy of the book We Are Water Protectors and will be invited to share aguas frescas and turtle-shaped conchas. Register

DESCRIPTION:SAN ANTONIO AUTHOR EVENT – THE TWIG BOOK SHOP (AT THE PEARL) \n  \nDoug Greco\, To Find a Killer: The Homophobic Murders of Norma and Maria Hurtado and the LGBT Rights Movement \n  \nEvent date:  \nTuesday\, July 18\, 2023 – 5:30pm to 7:00pm \nEvent address:  \nThe Twig Book Shop \n306 Pearl Parkway \nSuite 106 \nSan Antonio\, TX 78215 \n  \nA blend of True Crime\, narrative non-fiction and political analysis for everyone interested in LGBTQ rights. \nBeginning with a gripping\, firsthand account of the 2011 anti-gay murder of twenty-four year-old Norma Hurtado\, a student the author taught in an Austin high school ten years earlier\, this series of interwoven essays employs a mix of narrative nonfiction and political analysis to uncover the intersectional nature of the disparities impacting the LGBTQ community. \n  \nDrawing from his fifteen-years’ experience as a grassroots organizer in Texas and California\, Greco argues for the types of political organizations and public policies necessary to address these challenges. To Find a Killer charts a robust but pragmatic course for the LGBTQ movement today: investing in grassroots leadership development\, rooting organizations in local civic and religious institutions\, and focusing not just on legal equality\, but a wider set of socio-economic issues. \n  \nAuthor proceeds from the book will benefit Texas-based LGBTQ organizations. \n  \nDoug Greco is a writer and political organizer living in Austin\, Texas. His writing has been featured in Across the Margin Magazine\, Nonprofit Quarterly\, and Frontiers Magazine. “To Find a Killer” was a finalist in the “2021 Texas Writers League Manuscript Contest”\, and his account of the Hurtado Murders made the “2020 Best of Nonfiction List” for Across the Margin Magazine. Doug has organized for over 15 years in Austin and San Antonio with the Industrial Areas Foundation\, the nation’s largest and longest-standing network of faith and community-based organizations (including years with COPS and the Metro Alliance\, the IAF affiliate in San Antonio)\, and as Director of Programs with Equality California\, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ organization. He holds Masters in Public Policy from Princeton\, a Master of Professional Writing from USC\, and a Bachelors in Economics from Brown University.
