DESCRIPTION:The Esperanza Peace and Justice Center is pleased to announce that we are hosting Queer Voices\, in celebration of Pride Month\, and in collaboration with the Pride Center SA to present a night of poetry\, entertainment\, food\, and drink on June 30\, starting at 6 PM at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center 922 San Pedro\, San Antonio TX 78212. This is a free event.  but tickets can be reserved online at https://bit.ly/QueerVoices2022 \n  \nThe event starts at 6 PM with a Blessing Ceremony by SanArte Healing & Cultura Clinic and is hosted by Anel Flores and Chibbi. DESCRIPTION:The LGBTQ+ youth of color group is designed to provide support\, guidance\, and ways of managing your mental and emotional well-being. Potential topics include family and social supports\, safety and discrimination\, coming out and/or transitioning\, access to services and local resources\, and resilience and perseverance. \nWhy should I apply?  \nThis is an opportunity to participate in free group therapy with an experienced licensed marriage and family therapist\, Nelson Hernandez LMFT-Associate. These therapy sessions allow yourself and others to create personal goals\, learn more about your mental health\, and identify your strengths and resilience. The Strengthening Colors of PRIDE team will also give brief surveys to participants throughout the sessions. Those who chose to complete the 3 surveys will receive a small monetary incentive after completing each one. And yet\, in those perceived extremes\, many artists find these characters to be perfect platforms for broader\, more nuanced conversations about gender performance. Join Alejo Benedetti\, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and originating curator of Men of Steel\, Women of Wonder (which traveled to SAMA in 2019) as he discusses how artists engage this enduring comic topic on the art world stage. \nThis program will be held in-person and streamed via zoom at 6 p.m.

SUMMARY:Noche Azul: Tribute to Juanga & Chavela
DESCRIPTION:This month Azul is paying tribute to Chavela Vargas and Juan Gabriel\, two of Mexican and Ranchera music’s most inspiring representatives. Azul will be accompanied by musicians Juan Cabrera\, Emilio Alvarez and Nina Rodriguez. \n  \nChavela Vargas was a queer\, Mexican singer (born in Costa Rica) who lived from 1919-2012. Her passionate renditions of popular Ranchera songs made her a beloved figure in Mexico\, even as her androgynous appearance and unconventional life challenged norms of the day. Just as influential as her cultural contributions\, Chavela was a bold\, rebellious\, sexual pioneer who was known for having many female lovers at a time when being out in Mexico was dangerous. Chavela challenged mainstream Mexican morals by dressing in pants\, drinking tequila\, and smoking cigars while singing love songs intended for men to woo women and refused to change the pronouns. Although she didn’t officially identify as a lesbian until she was 81 years old\, Chavela carefully crafted a public persona as a powerful\, rebellious\, free spirited outsider\, and a sexy outlaw who blazed her own unique trail. \n  \nJuan Gabriel or Juanga (an affectionate nickname given to him by his audience)\, was an idol\, an iconic Mexican singer\, song-writer and one of the most prolific Mexican composers and singers of all time. His colorful outfits\, flamboyant style and performance broke barriers all over the world. He presented hundreds of concerts\, recorded albums with many other famous singers\, and received numerous awards. He preferred to remain coy on the issue of his sexualtiy and he was known to say: “Lo que se ve no se pregunta\,” what one sees doesn’t have to be questioned.  \n  \nChavela Vargas and Juan Gabriel prevailed and became cultural pinnacles and LGBTQ+ icons. They left this planet adored by millions\, and their music and stories will continue to impact the lives of future generations. ¡Que viva La Shamana! ¡Que viva El Divo de México!

SUMMARY:Heart-Land\, a Lesbian Drama by Leslie Powell
DESCRIPTION:In observance of National LGBTQ+ Pride Month\, Aria Creative Productions will present a staged reading of Heart-Land by Leslie Powell. Heart-Land is the psychological story of Jackie\, a young professional who falls in love with Celeste\, a woman running from her past and an abusive relationship. When Jackie receives a call from her former fiance\, the exchange puts the couple’s relationship in the balance. The cast includes Kristen Chen\, Amy Abrigo\, Val Martinez\, Karen Ross Garrett\, and Delicia Herrera.\n\nLeslie Powell is a Tucson-based playwright and a co-producer of the North Shore Readers Collaborative Theater. This is Aria Creative Productions’ second staged reading with its new artistic director\, Jade Esteban Estrada\, who joined the company on May 9.\n\nThe reading will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday\, June 23\, 2022 at Alamo City Studios. Jade Esteban Estrada will direct. Alamo City Studios is located at 1113 Houston Street in San Antonio\, Texas. Seating is limited. Face masks are recommended. General admission tickets are $10. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online through Brown Paper Tickets.\n\nThe New Play Development Series is an on-going initiative and Heart-land is the fifth installments. The purpose of the program is to give playwrights an opportunity to further develop new works. Each official selection of the series will receive two rehearsals before the staged reading and an audience feedback session. “For a playwright\, a staged reading is an important preparatory step in the creative process\,” said Estrada. “Last month’s reading of Backstage Fairytale by Michael John McGoldrick was an artistically rewarding experience. I am equally thrilled about this month’s selection. “The purpose of this program is to bring more fully developed plays to our stages\,” said Estrada. “When a great\, meaningful play has an opening night\, it is likely that the play had a table reading\, a staged reading\, and one or more workshop development performances. In my own experience as a playwright\, I get a better picture of what my play is about after I present it in front of a live audience.”

Would you like to share how queer culture has shaped South Texas? Sessions in this track should explore how the movement for LGBTQ+ rights and Texas history are inextricably linked. These talks should provide a timeline/overview of national queer history then dive deeper into specific examples in Texas and the South to provide clear context for youth participants. \nIntersectionality: A Framework for Social Change \nOur lived experience is multifaceted and must be examined through an intersectional lens to build an intersectional activism practice. Our unique social location is determined by a multitude of experiences such as race\, ethnicity\, nationality\, gender\, class\, and (dis)ability. Sessions in this track should embark on an understanding of how to build an intersectional framework to combat unconscious bias and encourage solidarity. These sessions should encourage youth to better understand where we are oppressed and where we hold power and privilege so that youth can mobilize collectively to address equity and achieve liberation. \nBuilding better routines of self-care and self-love  \nThis session track is intended for transgender\, non-binary and gender non-conforming youth to learn various methods of self-care and self-love to prevent burnout and how to embrace and empower their innew magical glow. Sessions should also provide space for you to share personal stories and their own journeys of transition (or of deciding not to transition). Sessions in this track can look like sharing skincare tips and make-up skills\, using arts\, creativity\, and personal expression\, or building skills to navigate mental health. \nReligion & Spirituality in the LGBTQ+ Community  \nOur community knows the pains and discrimination brought by close minded faith communities. This topic track will feature a panel of faith leaders with different beliefs who will discuss how people of faith can repair and build healthy relationships with LGBTQ+ youth and adults. \nCreating Queer Political Power \nEach of us has a responsibility to act and resist the homophobia\, transphobia\, racism and discrimination that are often found in the political sphere. These sessions will include information on voting rights and why political participation is crucial to the advancement of our movement\, visibility\, and rights. Proposals for this track should have a focus on learning how the political system works in Texas\, what current policy issues are at the forefront of the fight for LGBTQ+ rights\, and how youth can get involved. \nInclusive Sex Ed\, Consent and Healthy Relationships  \nThis session track will focus on inclusive sex education\, consent and building the foundations of healthy relationships. Proposals for this topic can also include medical accurate information about HIV\, the local HIV epidemic in Texas\, and local STD\, STI and HIV prevention and treatment resources. Participants will also learn about local groups\, initiatives\, and organizations in South Texas communities providing LGBTQ+ health services aimed at addressing the local HIV epidemic.

The Strengthening Colors of PRIDE team will also give brief surveys to participants throughout the sessions. Those who chose to complete the 3 surveys will receive a small monetary incentive after completing each one.
