A safe zone is a place where all people feel safe, welcome and included. It may be a room, a car, or an entire organization. The Center’s Safe Zone Training aims to increase the awareness, knowledge, and skills for individuals and addresses the challenges that exist when one wants to advocate for their LGBTQ peers, family members, friends, and for themselves. This dynamic, interactive session includes activities and discussion around: inclusive and respectful language, the process of coming out, understanding sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, where to go for help and much more. Creating safe zones is a proactive step that schools, agencies and corporations take to create welcoming, inclusive spaces so that all people are empowered to reach their full potential.
Andrea Figueroa, executive director of Martinez Street Women’s Center said, “We feel it is important to embody the values we want to see in the community. That’s why we took Pride Center’s Safe Zone Training. As a Center that values equality, we have to start the work from the inside out, so that we can be our best selves when serving our community. Thank you to the Pride Center for creating a safe space/brave space. Everyone learned so much!”
This year alone, 2,593 San Antonians from 19 partnering agencies like the Big Brothers & Big Sisters of South Texas, the FBI, Martinez Street Women’s Center, and the San Antonio Police Academy have benefitted from our Safe Zone & Cultural Competency Trainings.
Last week we launched our 2016 Year-End Campaign, 37 community members answered the call, 10 of those committing as monthly sustaining donors. If we have 100 people commit to $10.00 or more per month, we will be on our way to securing a physical location to operate a fully functioning walk-in center with regular hours and increased programs and services.
Would you be willing to make a special year-end monthly donation commitment of $10, $25, $50 or whatever you can afford to help us meet our goal and give our LGBTQ+ community the resource center and safe space they deserve? The reality is we simply can’t do it without you. Your support will make a real, lasting impact for all of San Antonio.
