San Antonio Holds Transgender Day of Remembrance Memory Walk
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – In the first 11 months of 2016 we’ve had twenty-four transgender deaths as a result of violence, surpassing the number of trans lives lost last year. This year, now the deadliest year, started with Monica Loera on January 22 in Austin, Texas. Other Texans include Erykah Tijerina on August 8 in El Paso, Shante Isaac on April 10 in Houston, and Veronica Banks Cano* on February 19 local to San Antonio.
On Thursday, November 17th The Center – Pride Center San Antonio will hold a Memory Walk to commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). We invite the community to walk with us, carry a light, carry a sign, or light a candle as we say their names. Walk with us painfully, proud, defiant, and unified. We walk in memory of those who no longer walk, no longer sing, no longer dance, and no longer cry.
Transgender Day of Remembrance is held annually as a memorial to trans identified and gender variant individuals who are murdered each year due to hate, transphobia and society’s strict adherence to the gender binary. This event aims to raise awareness and educate the larger community in order to effect change in this horrifying trend.
The walk will culminate in a “service” held at MCC San Antonio at 7:00 pm with a social to follow.
