Happy Pride, Friends!
It’s been more than 50 years since icons Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera with an army of drag queens and people of many colors took to the streets outside of the Stonewall Inn. That night PRIDE began, not with a festival or a celebration, pride began as a riot – the Stonewall Riots.
PRIDE in current times is largely an opportunity to celebrate being LGBTQ+, our authenticity and our wins over the years, but we must not forget our history and what ignited the modern day LGBTQ+ rights movement.
The month of June was chosen for PRIDE Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969. Since the Stonewall Riots in 1969, many significant things have happened during the the month of June.
- June 2003 – US Supreme Court strikes down the “homosexual conduct” law
- June 2013 – US Supreme Court strikes down part of the Defense of Marriage Act
- June 2015 – US Supreme Court rules Marriage Equality is the law of the land
- June 2020 – US Supreme Court rules that workplace discrimination laws protect LGBTQ+ people
As a result, many pride events are held during this month to recognize the impact LGBTQ+ people have had in the world. We invite you to join us and our partners at the following events this June PRIDE month!

“Can’t Cancel Pride,” presented by P&G and iHeartMedia
In 2020, “Can’t Cancel Pride” raised over $4 million to benefit the LGBTQ+ communities most impacted by COVID-19. This year’s event has a goal to raise even more in 2021, as the pandemic continues to have a damaging effect on the fundraising efforts that LGBTQ+ organizations rely on to survive.

Join us for a virtual panel discussion with local experts and community advocates to discuss how parents and the wider community can support LGBTQIA+ youth, including transgender and gender non-binary youth. Panelists will feature Sandra Whitley from Thrive Youth Center, Alex Gomez from The Trevor Project, a representative from the San Antonio Gender Association, and F. Leanne Lindsey from Center for Health Care Services.
